Roy and I are giving two talks called 'Why Jane Austen Loves a Sailor', as part of our promotion of our book Eavesdropping on Jane Austen's England. This new talk of ours is partly linked to this book, partly linked to Jack Tar and very much linked to the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mansfield Park, with its naval theme. The talks are:

Dartington, Devon, at the Ways With Words festival, part of a ‘Writers and Their World’ day, Monday 7th July 2014 in the Barn, 10am. Tickets £10. See http://www.wayswithwords.co.uk.

Kelmarsh Hall, Northamptonshire, at the huge English Heritage ‘History Live!’ festival, which takes place on the weekend of 19th and 20th July. See http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/daysout/events/history-live2014/ – over 2,000 re-enactors and performers will bring the story of England to life, including battles, talks, live music, a historic market and a real-ale bar. Our talk will be at 10.30am on Saturday 19th July in the BBC History Magazine tent. The events are free once you have bought a ticket for a whole day or weekend.
