7th annual Oxford Naval Symposium
Fly Navy : the first 100 years of naval aviation
Friday 15th and Saturday 16th May 2009

The Britannia Naval Research Association’s seventh annual Oxford Naval Symposium (ONS 2009) takes place on 15th and 16th May 2009.
This year the theme celebrates the first one hundred years of naval aviation and includes a study day at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton on Friday 16th May, looking at artefacts and documents related to the history of naval aviation.
On Friday evening a Reception will be hosted by Blackwell the Knowledge Retailer, in the Norrington Room of their bookshop in Broad Street, Oxford. The evening features a talk by Bernard Ireland, the naval historian and author, and the Reception will include a display of books relevant to the theme of the Symposium.
The main day of the Symposium, on Saturday 16th May, is the conference on the theme “Fly Navy”, at St Anne’s College, Oxford. The theme traces the development and strategic and tactical use of fixed-wing, rotor-wing and lighter-than-air aircraft by the world’s navies.
The confirmed speakers are: Captain Niels Sørensen RVM, the Danish Defence Attaché; Captain Norm Jolin CDF(N), the Canadian Defence Attaché; Lt-Cmdr Dr Malcolm Llewellyn-Jones RN, historian at the Naval Historical Branch; Captain Eric Brown DSC AFC, the pilot of the first jet aircraft to land-on an RN carrier; Dr Nick Hewitt, Imperial War Museum; Dr Alan Flanders; Chris Lentzy; Justin Reay FSA, University of Oxford; and David Morris of the Fleet Air Arm Museum. The keynote speaker will be Captain Jock Alexander RN, Deputy Assistant Chief Royal Navy Carrier Strike.
Their papers include a study of the earliest forms of aircraft designed to be flown from ships at sea; the development of aircraft-carrying warships; US Navy aircraft carriers; early US seaplanes in Ireland; an introduction to the rarely-studied German naval air arm; WWII naval air operations in the Atlantic; WWII naval air actions in the Pacific in which the most recent naval VC was awarded; naval air tactics in amphibious operations; the design and deployment of Britain’s two new aircraft carriers, due to enter service from 2015, and a panel discussion of naval aviation in strategic maritime planning.
