Post subject:  William Jewell and John Franklin

I don't know of other members of the forum with Bellerophon connections - I guess they would have chipped in by now.

But how about this connection:

This is just a hunch, but I think it is quite likely that William Jewell named his son William Franklin Niblet Jewell after John Franklin, fellow midshipman in the Bellerophon. John Franklin was signal midshipman in the Battle of Trafalgar. William Jewell and John Franklin also served together in the Bedford, escorting the Portugese royal family to Brazil. This John Franklin is none other than Sir John Franklin of North West Passage fame (also governor of Van Diemen’s Land).

I may well be wrong, and I must admit to being drawn to the idea because my own ancestor Charles Mansfield also named his two sons after fellow midshipmen of the first ship in which he saw action. It would have been a time when lasting friendships were formed.

There’s always a chance that there may be letters of Franklin’s that mention William Jewell. There are some papers on microfilm available in Australia. See entry 181 here: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=NK43 ... q=&f=false

William Jewell and John Franklin were both born in 1786, and both died in 1847 – perhaps in rather different circumstances! Both only just survived long enough to claim their Naval General Service Medal, which was first issued in 1847, and only to those still alive to claim it.

By the way, I have only been researching naval history in any detail for the last four years, so don't rely too much on my posts!

Being new to Nelson I have found the exchanges on WNJ most interesting and would like to throw in the fruits of my own research. As has been reported WNJ was bapt 14 July 1786 Gillingham, the son of Thomas Jewell and Mary Nunn who were married 14 Oct 1771 Shorne. He was one of 3 surviving sons and one daughter Elizabeth. Thomas Jewell was bapt 25 Dec 1745 Cobham one of 5 children born to Richard Jewell and Sarah Mumm who married in London 14 Aug 1743. Whilst this marriage is speculative all their 5 surviving children are in the Parish records. As to Richard's origins, trawling thro Medway Towns PRs yields nothing however the records for a port 30 miles to the east, Margate reveals much activity in the 17/18th Centuries and a Richard Jewell was bapt 8 Oct 1713 Joseph Jewell/Elizabeth Barber. The records for Margate show two previous generations of the Jewell family goig back to Joseph Jewell in 1630. Obviously Richards roots are therefore speculative.
William Nunn Jewell's older sister Elizabeth Nunn Jewell bapt 8 May 1782 Chatham (my 2 x Great Grandmother) married Pierre Chabert Galopin in Abergavenny 23 Dec 1813 (IGI). He was a French POW described in the PR as an Aspirant (Trainee Officer) of the French Marine. He along with others including Admiral de Grasse Tilly founded the Freemasons Lodge at Abergavenny. An on-line book entitled "French Prisoners' Lodges" is worth reading and includes Galopin's signature.
Pierre and Elizabeth had two daughters; the younger Charlotte b 1817 Glasbury married my Great Grandfather John Thomas Bennett at Islington in 1845 and one witness at the ceremony was Lt William N Jewell RN. WNJ's second wife Sarah Weaver was daughter of William Weaver born Dublin 1795 who served in the Royal Navy at about the same time as WNJ and whose service Record can be found in British Naval Biographical Dictionary, 1849.
