Hi,
I'm new on this site, and really my dad is the Nelson enthusiast, but I was wondering if any of you on this site could give me some personal insight into this particular purchase and/or it's suitability as a birthday present.

I found it on this website:

http://www.lucyaskew.co.uk/cat/nelson.htm

Basically we're running out of good present ideas for dad, and I thought that this might just be the perfect quirky Nelson thing for him to add to his collection of curios and desk paraphernalia!

What do you guys think? Have any of you got one?

Thanks for any help!

Best wishes,

George

Welcome to the forum, George.

I should think your dad will be delighted with this memento of Nelson's funeral.

It seems as though one of the miniatures was used in the re-enactment of Nelson's funeral in January 2006, and accompanied Sir Alan (now Lord) West, the First Sea Lord on the barge down the Thames.

Thanks Anna for the warm welcome and that link about the re-enactment.

Hopefully my dad will be very pleased with one of these coffins (especially if none of his friends have one the same, and only the likes of Lord West have one!!)

Does anyone know of anyone else who has one? Or is this a truly unique Nelson present that I have stumbled across?!

I have to decide by about mid week coming what to get, so any info from anyone on this topic would be great :)

Best wishes,

George

George:

the coffin memento will have a certain rarity value as the artist has limited her production to 500 and it comemmorates the anniversary of a significant date in English history. She is also an artist of note, having received an official commission for her work of the Painted Hall.

Another thing you might consider as a present is a memento that dates from Nelson's day. This website has some prints and other mementos which were created at the time, or not long after, Nelson's death. Some are very expensive but a few of the prints are as little as £35.

I love that coffin, and your Dad should be well pleased with it, George! (and if he doesn't like it, then give it to me...)

Ok, I have decided to order a coffin.
I will let you guys know what it's like when it arrives, and whether or not dad likes it! :)

Thanks for all of your help.

Well dads birthday went very well and he really liked the coffin! :D So it was a good present to go for, phew! :)

The coffin is pretty cool because the tiny gold writing on the black velvet can actually be read by using a magnifying glass :o The booklet that comes with the coffin is also nice and dad has enjoyed reading it.

Thanks for all of the help everyone gave on helping me decide on the present.

Best wishes,

George
