Post subject:  Buying Prints

On the general discussion thread I posted details of a print of a watercolour of a lost portrait of Nelson.

I know that many people on this forum are knowledgeable about buying art, but I thought it might be helpful to those who are new to collecting prints to have a few guidelines to help them avoid some of the pitfalls that can trap the unwary new collector. I prepared the attached note for other purposes but I hope it will be useful to some viewers here.

I am not an expert but I have collected pictures and prints for many years and learned from my mistakes along the way. All the information has been checked by a forum member who is an art historian so I think it is pretty reliable.

Thanks to Tony for technical expertise in posting the pdf.

Here is an example of a 'Limited Edition Print'. It is a giclée reproduction (that is, a copy made on a glorified printer) of a lithograph by Vanessa Bell. It is unsigned, but it IS limited to 850 copies. On that basis, they have listed it at £214.99 - unframed! Note there's no suggestion of dishonesty here - they have said it is a reproduction. It is just mind-bogglingly, cardiac-arrest-inducingly overpriced - if you know the difference between a limited edition original print and a giclée print!!

Here's a link to a sale at Christie's of one of the ORIGINAL lithographs by Vanessa Bell from the print run of 100:
