Hi, I wonder if anyone out there has a copy of this wonderful book published in 1968, Monday 21st October 1805 by Ian Ribbons As we are sailing into Trafalgar week this book gives an interesting insight into events that were taking place throughout Europe on the day of Trafalgar.

Thanks for the info, Stephen. I've ordered a copy from abebooks for a fiver, but don't know when I'll get it because of the postal strikes. I have long been interested in contemporary records in diaries, letters etc. of how the news of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson was received by indviduals, and reported in contemporary newspapers so this promises to be a treat. I have an 1805 copy of The Times recording the first news of Trafalgar, given to me by a connection of Admiral Beatty of Jutland fame, so it seemed to have some 'provenance'; however, it was only after discussion with Mark and others that we realised it was a fake! (For one thing, the Royal Arms traditionally borne by The Times masthead were those of Queen Victoria!) That the newspaper was faked does indicate, though, the significance and resonance of the death of Nelson. Perhaps I'll open a thread on the main discussion board to collate news of Nelson's death and victory. |

Ha! I saw this book reviewed on television, and asked for it for Christmas; I was eleven. It was my second book about Nelson. Still have it, still read it; an excellent introduction to the period. |

It was my third book on the great man or connected. The first being the Ladybird book,(Still have it) Then Nelson and the age of Fighting Sail (Cassall) another pretty good book and a great introduction. The thing is am still collecting.

Wow, this is creepy – my first book was Nelson and the Age of Fighting Sail (sent from my father in Rhodesia, and I still have it) - third was the Ladybird, given by a aunt with strange ideas about age; sadly it has been lost, although I later wrote for the premier Ladybird artist: Martin Aitchison. And yes, still collecting... |
