I am new to the forum and am wondering how to find injuries sustained by my 3 x great grandfather at the Battle of Waterloo. Captain Peter INNES 79th Regiment of Foot, he was wounded April 1814 age 59. This information I picked up on another site.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum, Freckle!

The main focus of our forum is naval history but I'm sure members will help you out in your searches for info about your ancestor if they can. In the meantime, have a look through the military records held by the National Archives here in the UK. (Click on link below.) You just might find some hints to follow up in your research. Good luck!

There were two regiments known as the 79th of Foot, but the first one of that name, the Royal Liverpool Volunteers was disbanded towards the end of the 18th century, so your ancestor must have served in the 79th known as The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders - more here:

There is also a regimental museum; even if they have no specific information on your ancestor, you might get some interesting background material to 'fill in the picture.'

A welcome from me too, Freckle,

I have a small query. You say that your ancestor was wounded in April 1814, but this was approximately one year and two months before Waterloo, which was fought on 18th June 1815. Have you made a slight slip in the date? If not, then he must have been wounded in an earlier action, although of course it is possible he was present at Waterloo.

Crikey - was he really 60 years old at the Battle of Waterloo??!!

I found a mention in the London Gazette of 1815. Not regarding any injury but he is in a list of men promoted for their conduct in the Battle of Waterloo.

Peter Innes of the 79th Foot was promoted from Captain to Major.

Thank you MB, Kester, SEvans and tycho. For starters  it was 1814. Typo. I thought I had this information from this site

http://glosters.tripod.com/memindex3.htm

I just went back to check and I can't find it.
He was always known as Captain, so he may have been demoted!!?? His twin brother John made Major as did their other brother James. Long history of fighting men, back as far as the St Clair/Sinclair Knights.
79th was the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders. Sorry about the mixup, I didn't realize it was a Naval thing, thought it was just Waterloo.
I will spend some time trolling the links you have all been so kind to give me.
Thank you all very much for your input. And yes he was born in 1755.

Cheers

Hi Freckle,

You might find these two Genealogy Forums of use in your Ancestor.

www.british-genealogy.com

www.rootschat.com

both very useful and helpful.

Thank you again for the links SEvans. I have been a member of Rootschat pretty much since I started my search. The people there offer invaluable assistance. The downfall with googling the Captain is there were so many with the same name and tended to join the same Regiments. Thats how I found the information about the wounds.
I told a cousin I would help her with some Australian research to-day,(She lives in France) so afraid poor Captain is on hold for the day. I will be back with him tomorrow (Friday) then I will delve deeper into the other site.
I imagine with my French ancestry I may have had a family member on both sides at the Battle.
Thank you again for your interest, advice and time its very much appreciated.

Cheers
