Mention has been made on an earlier thread of a study of 18th and 19th century naval log books that yielded valuable information about climate change. This paper is concerned with log books from the late 17th century, a little earlier than our period, but interesting, nonetheless. It obviously uses some nautical terms but there is little academic obfuscation, which is refreshing. Being interested in language, I was intrigued by the 'grades' of wind (p.139) in Defoe's Table of Winds, from 'stark calm' (Grade 0) to 'tempest' (grade 11). A 'fret of wind' (grade 9) was more than 'a hard gale' (grade eight) but less than 'a storm' (grade 10).
