Nelson's statue in Birmingham was the first statue, but I have a feeling it wasn't the first monument?

How many statues, monuments and memorials exist to Nelson? (I'm sure you know the answer, Mark.)

And how does Nelson rank against Abraham Lincoln in the commemoration stakes?

I posted this link some time ago - it is 'claimed' that the monument was the first raised in Nelson's memory:

I would imagine the most recent one is just outside the Trafalgar Tavern, Greenwich and a very good one at that.

I agree, Stephen. I posted an image of it here on Trafalgar Day 2008.

I think I have described before how I came across this statue when I got lost in Greenwich one torrentially rainy day. The street was eerily empty - not a soul about; and afterwards, I couldn't remember the name of the pub. I began to wonder whether I had imagined the whole thing!

Tony

I did start to make a list once but never managed to complete it. It would probably take a small book to really do the subject justice!!

We are very precise about our claim in Birmingham.

i.e. We can't claim to have to have the first monument in the U.K. - that is the one highlighted here by Anna.

And we can't claim to have the first statue in the world - that would be Montreal.

But we do have the first statue in the U.K. - so we are quite happy to shout that from the rooftops!

The Nelson statue was also the first public statue in Birmingham. And no other statue was erected for at least another 50 years. Hence the town (as was) seems to have developed an especially close bond with his Lordship!!

We know we have one of the biggest Trafalgar Day ceremonies - but I don't know if we are overshadowed by events in e.g. London and Portsmouth.

Can anyone tell me what events there are in those 2 places nowadays.

At one time the ceremony in Trafalgar Square used to be televised - but I imagine that everything is now on a much reduced scale. I would be interested in details if anyone can help.

Mark:

I am pretty sure the ceremony in Portsmouth is a private naval one aboard HMS Victory, with civic dignitaries from the city of Portmouth in attendance, but am open to correction. If there is a public ceremony, I'd like to be there one day.

There is also one at Nelson's tomb in St Paul's. Funnily enough, I have a picture of the ceremony there last year sent to me with a Christmas card from a former neighbour. I had no idea he was a Nelson fan - it never came up in our conversations years ago. (He did his national service in the RN and was so put out at not getting any sea service, promptly joined the merchant navy!)

Mark,

The Marine Society and Sea Cadets (they amalgamated in 2004) have this planned for Trafalgar Square:

I believe the Sea Cadets have taken part in this parade for some years. I somehow doubt it will be televised!

Here's a link to a pic of the 'other' Nelson's Column near Portsmouth. Funny, I don't recall seeing/reading about this!

Anna,

I seem to remember there was an article about this in the Nelson Dispatch a few issues ago. I don't have access to it at the moment, but have found this on the web, I believe written by the same author. It is very interesting:

http://www.memorials.inportsmouth.co.uk ... column.htm

I think a wreath laying ceremony is held at its base every year on Trafalgar Day.

Thanks for the link, Kester.

Here's another link to a memorial, rather than a monument, to Nelson, that I received by Google alert this morning:

Has anyone else ever heard of the 'Nelson Ring'? Brian - can you support/debunk this Nelson connection?
