An exhibition about Lord Cochrane is to open in Edinburgh, with artefacts from many parts of the world, apparently some being displayed for the first time:

I attended the opening (by Princess Ann) of the Cochrane Exhibition in Edinburgh last Thursday in company with a large selection of the Scottish good and great, including the Dundonald family. The exhibition is divided, more or less, into five chronological areas each devoted to a part of Cochrane’s life, supplemented by a short biographical film (dominated by scenes from ’Master and Commander’) and audio visual material showing such things as the Basque Roads engagement. The supporting displays of artifacts, paintings, documents, medals, uniforms and models are excellent and well chosen and the range of things on display and their method of presentation could not be bettered.
The Curator, Stuart Allen carried out assiduous research into the project and is fully aware not only of Cochrane’s military genius but of his personality defects and the unreliability of many of his complaints and reminiscences. Thus the descriptive labels contain enough ‘corrective’ comment and accurate (rather than Cochrane-based) information to satisfy the sceptic - like me.
I doubt however if anyone else in the audience noticed these nuances as the event had a strong undercurrent of national pride. Sir Angus Grossart, Chairman of the Trustees, was interested in Cochrane’s deeds and not in his quirks of personality or contentious memoirs. He clearly preferred to believe Cochrane’s self portrait as the persecuted Scots Hero, and explained that the object of the exhibition was to ensure that Cochrane’s exploits are better known in his native land both on their own merits and as a confirmation of the wonderful deeds done by Scotsmen and their descendents on the international stage. This notion seemed to generate wide approval, and seemed confirmed when it was revealed that the name of the attending Chilean Naval Attache was Capitan-de-Navio MacFarlane!
The exhibition is well worth visiting both as a summary of Cochrane career, or careers, and as a window into life in the British Navy at the time.

Brian,

I thought we might be hearing from you, and glad you found the exhibition worth while from a sceptics point of view!
Perhaps though there may have been a few other Cochrane experts present, who were rather more critical than most of the guests seemed to be.

Sounds like a good exhibition, it's a pity I probably shan't be able to get there.
