I have just found that the Norfolk Record Office have asked if any of their Twitter followers would like information on any Norfolk parishes.  NRO have said they would try to show pictures connected with any parishes who responded. One follower mentioned Burnham Thorpe and the NRO responded by putting a link on their Twitter page to a picture of the Rev. Edmund Nelson, father of Lord Nelson.

Not sure if this link will work as I am not technical! If doesn't work, see Twitter/@NorfolkRO

I have just tried the link! I had to do it twice and then it worked!

Many thanks for the link.

You can certainly see a strong resemblance to Nelson, though I recall reading 'somewhere' (can anyone help?) - that the painting was made after Nelson became famous and the artist might have deliberately heightened the father's resemblance to the son.

I had been thinking the same way, so I had a look at the link below the etching. Although the website states the etching was made in 1845 it does not indicate when the portrait was painted. Quote from NRO below.

Quote:
Date 1845
Notes This engraving shows the Rev.Edmund Nelson, father to Lord Horatio Nelson. Edmund was the rector of the parish church of All Saints, Burnham Thorpe in Norfolk. He and his wife Catherine raised a family of eight children at the parsonage, of which Horatio was the middle son of five boys and three girls. This portrait was etched by W.C.Edwards in 1845 and published by C.Muskett of Norwich.
