A letter written by Nelson to Lady Hamilton is about to go under the hammer. Estimate: £10,000. Seems a bit low to me. Any comments?

I've had a look at Christies Online Catalogue which is under the title 'Valuable Manuscripts and Printed Books' Sale on pages 28/9. I think with the subject matter the upper estimate limit of £15,000 may well be more realistic.

The catalogue also lists two other Nelson letters in the same sale. One dated Foudroyant Naples 25 July 1799 to Spencer Smith brother of William Sydney Smith referring to Sydney's defence of Acre with an estimate of £5,000-£8000. The other is dated 23 April 1803 to the Prime Minister Henry Addington, complaining about his unequel financial treatment relative to Earl St Vincent and Viscount Duncan estimated at £4000 - £6000

Happy Bidding

Phil

There's a piece in the Times today noting that the letter sold yesterday for £23,750. It doesn't say whether that was the hammer price or whether it includes the the buyer's premium. I suspect the former, in which case, add another 20%.

Looking at the Christies Sale results online, the other two letters ' only ' realised £5,625 and £4,375 respectively.

A large gap in the prices between those and the Hamilton letter and which I guess reflects the enduring fascinaton of the Nelson/Hamilton love story.
