Many of us will be familiar with Daniel Maclise's painting of the Death of Nelson.

I came across an interesting sidelight on this picture the other day - a letter from the 3rd Earl Nelson saying that he was coming to London to show the Nile medal and other decorations to Mr Maclise. They don't appear to be much in evidence in the crowded canvas, but it was a generous gesture.

Autograph Letter Signed to [name illegible], 1¼ pages 8vo on black-edged paper, Trafalgar, 8 April no year. Informing his correspondent that he goes to London the following day and will bring the Nile Medal and the Stars 'which the Admiral wore on his Coat' to show to Mr Maclise.
Presumably the medals were to help with Maclise's famous portrait The Death of Nelson.
