Hope this may be your man Anna.

Davidge Gould
Burial 3rd May 1847
Aged 90
St Mary the Virgin,
Stapleford Abbots,
Essex.

His father was probably Davidge also and I have a record for his burial 1765, in Somerset.

The 1841 Census shows him living in Nelson Cresent, Ramsgate, Kent, with wife Harriet.

Umm, no, I don't think so - sorry, I forgot, what was the question?

The information in my last post was mostly from the 1805 Club newsletter - downloaded and indexed on my computer...

I received the following email via 'contact Nelson & his World' from new member 'Kiwisusan' which I am posting here. It contains interestng information about Richard Hatherill. Thankyou, Susan, and welcome to the forum!

I couldn't find an address to email, so joined in the hope that I can help you with a 'missing grave' I saw mentioned for RICHARD HATHERILL.

RICHARD HATHERILL was married to MARY PENNAL in Queenborough, Kent. When Richard died in 1804 she went on to marry one of my ancestors. Anyway to cut a long story short whilst collecting information for family history, RICHARD HATHERILL was buried in Queenborough, Kent on 15 November 1804. His father was the local minister at the time (JOSEPH HATHERILL).

I have a copy of Richard's Will (which was dated 29 October 1804 and proved 8 December 1804).

Would you be in a position to advise me on any information you may have regarding Richard i.e his cause of death, records of any ships (besides the Hecla)?

Hi Susan, the research into the Copenhagen captains has been carried out by various members of the 1805 Club, and I haven't been involved with Richard Hatherill. The following appeared in the 1805 Club newsletter earlier this year, which your information confirms and expands:
Quote:
Richard Hatherill: Again thanks to Richard Venn and Randy Mafit, his burial place is now identified as being at Queenborough church, Sheppey, Kent. However, there is no plan of the churchyard, and many gravestones are illegible, so it is not possible to identify which is the correct grave. His (?) father Joshua or Joseph Hatherill was the incumbent at Queenborough from 1775 until his death in 1811.
John Curtis, Secretary of the 1805 Club, is coordinating the research, and the intention is to publish a book with details of the graves and brief biographies of the captains. I am sure he would be happy to let you know what information there is on Hatherill, and would be grateful for any information that you have. Contact details are here: http://www.1805club.org/contactus

I don't have any information on the cause of death, or his other ships, but the catalogue at the National Archives brings up a few references to both Richard and Joseph Haverill (who evidently had been a chaplain in the Navy):
Quote:
ADM 6/22/14 David Campbell Young, purser; Robert Barratt, boatswain; John Wilson, boatswain; Miles Jennings, gunner; Robertson Farmouth, gunner; James Hookins, gunner; Nathaniel Stone, carpenter; William Parkins, carpenter; John Taylor, carpenter; William Buttery, carpenter; Reverend Joseph Hatherill, Chaplain; George Elmsley, master at arms. 1779

ADM 6/23/428 Joseph Nowland, carpenter; Edward James Foote, 8th Lieutenant; James Yeo, purser; Patrick Conway, purser; Reverend Joseph Hatherill, Chaplain; Reverend Henry Stephens, Chaplain; Isaac Battars, gunner; Myles Jennings, gunner; Mitchell Graham, Rear Admiral. 1787
ADM 6/342/3 ff. 10-14. Mary Hatherill, widow of Richard Hatherill, Captain Royal Navy who died 11 Nov 1804. Papers submitted to the Charity for the relief of Officers' Widows. 1804

ADM 354/223/146 William Marsden. The Reverend Joseph Hatherill, lately a Naval Chaplain, wishes to know what remuneration he is entitled to. Refer to earlier letters on this subject and report that there is no change in his entitlement. 1806 Aug 6

Dates of Richard Hatherill's promotions were as follows:

    Commander: 13 January 1801
    Post-Captain: 29 April 1802

Has the 1805 club done anything to mark the burial place of my man, Sam Sutton, who captained the Alcmene at Copenhagen?

I'm in contact with his collateral descendant, Gail, also a forum member, and she discovered that Sam is buried underneath the organ of St Mary's in Woodbridge, Suffolk but as far as she knows, there is no memorial plaque. I had an email from her today asking if I know whether the 1805 Club planned anything, or have installed anything to mark his burial place. Do they even know about it?

Does anyone know? TIA for help.

Yes, I must get round to joining the 1805 Club - which reminds me, subs due for the Nelson Society........

Anna,

It doesn't look as if they have.

In the 1805 Club Conservation Roll (coincidentally published in the latest edition of the Kedge Anchor) there is no mention of Sam Sutton or a plaque to him. I can't find any mention of anything on their website either.

As you say it could just be that they do not know of the place of his burial, but I am sure if they were to know of it they would be interested. From there I would imagine the provision of a plaque would be considered.

I think that will probably be part of the next phase of the project. The first two phases were to identify and survey burial places, all of which have been identified, although the exact location of some graves in churches or churchyards have been lost. The next phase will be any necessary conservation work of existing graves or marking burial places where no grave can be identified. The club also intends to publish a book with details of the graves and brief biographies of the captains.
