Warren served very briefly (weeks or months) as a lieutenant in
Victory in 1779 under Captain Henry Collins and Admiral Sir Charles Hardy before he was promoted commander of the
Helena sloop on 5 August 1779. Describing HMS
Victory (1765) as Nelson's
Victory, while distinguishing her from "Balchen's"
Victory (1737), is often unhelpful. In this case, saying that Warren 'was
revered for the time he spent fighting the French aboard Admiral Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory' is complete and utter nonsense.
HMS
Victory was of course also Keppel's flagship at Ushant and Jervis's flagship at Cape St Vincent.
Warren is most famous for his defeat in 1798 of the small French squadron carrying troops for Ireland.
The BBC's article was a bit more informative:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-no ... e-13452982 - except that I would take issue with the statement that Warren's action in 1798 was equally-important to Trafalgar!
