As mentioned on the Alexander Ball thread, the 1805 Club is trying to locate and survey the graves of all the Nile and Copenhagen Captains. The graves of all the Nile Captains have been located and surveyed, but there are nine Copenhagen Captains whose graves are still unlocated, and another five whose graves have yet to be visited and recorded.

The following graves are yet to be located:

William Birchall died 12 December 1817
William Bolton last in the Navy List, October 1830
Richard Hatherill died 11 November 1804
Henry Inman died in Madras (Chennai) India 15 July 1809
Jonas Rose died circa 20 July 1820.
Clotworthy Upton died at Trincomalee while Commissioner of the Navy, Ceylon, August 1822
James Watson last in the Navy List, June 1833
Hender Whitter last in the Navy List, September 1809
John Yelland died in London, December 1827

The following graves are yet to be visited and surveyed:

Sir William Domett Hawkchurch, Dorset
John Henry Martin Ludchurch, Pembrokeshire
Richard Retalick Padstow, Cornwall
Samuel C Rowley Annaduff, Leitrim, Ireland
Samuel Sutton Woodbridge, Suffolk

The Club has asked its members for help, and I am sure would also be very grateful for any information or assistance from members of this forum.

Hi Tony,
I am aware of these projects as a member of the 1805 Club myself. The Club is also aware and interested in my research on Air Alexander Ball's grave here in Malta.

Hi Stephen, I presume that therefore means that the 1805 Club don't know the exact location of Alexander Ball's coffin? What sort of memorial is visible in the fort?

I assume somebody has already searched the Times newspaper archive for any mention of the "missing" graves.

But are you aware of the searchable database of 19th century regional and other miscellaneous newspapers that has been created by the Gale Group.

It's just possible there could be something of interest hiding away in there.

Birmingham Library are considering subscribing to it and I was given a sneak preview. I found it invaluable for a specific piece of research I was involved in at the time.

I imagine other libraries may have already taken it up and one of the 1805 Club members could check out the names you are looking for.

In the meantime here are the details of the newspapers included: http://www.gale.cengage.com/tlist/bl_ncnp.html

I managed to get another VERY temporary access to the above-mentioned database.

I just took one name "John Yelland" and tried a search on that. I found a death notice for him and it gives PIMLICO, London.

Maybe you already have that but if not should be quite easy to see which local church he might have been buried in - and then get someone to check the burial records for that church at the relevant date.

Apologies if you already have this - but I thought it was worth sharing.

If circumstances allow I will try some other names and report back.

Also checked Jonas Rose.

Found death notice in "The Exeter Flying Post".

Unfortunately no details of precise location - but I would have thought well worth checking the burial records of the principle church(s) in or close to Exeter. As you have a precise date would not be a particularly onerous task even if it comes up negative.

Thanks Mark, for your input on this. I have to confess that I have not been involved at all in any of the research for this project, and so I do not know which sources have been consulted so far. I will pass on all information provided here, or point the Club at this thread for any further information that anyone can come up with.

Your information of Pimlico as the place of John Yelland's death should narrow down the search., and I see from the Gentleman's Magazine that the date was December 24th.

There was some more information given for Jonas Rose, which was that 'his family came from Limerick, Ireland, and he may be buried there. But his will says he was “of the parish of St Pancras, Middlesex”. There is no trace in the church registers of that area, but he may have been Roman Catholic, and so buried elsewhere.' Your information on a death notice in The Exeter Flying Post could therefore be a very significant new lead.

I have found a Hender Whitter listed as the Mayor of East Looe in 1802. I wonder if that was the Captain's own position during the peace of Amiens. His christening seems to have been 19 AUG 1770 at Falmouth, so Cornwall seems a good bet for him.

All but two of the graves have now been located, the two exceptions being those of William Birchall and Jonas Rose. I am sure the 1805 Club would be very grateful for any further leads.

Sorry if my info about the Exeter newspaper for Jonas Rose was a red herring.

I have done some more searching and found that his death was also reported in the Hampshire Chronicle - but unfortunately again without any location.

I can easily get hold of a copy of Jonas Rose's will which should give an address at the time the will was made.

But no point doing that if someone has already been there.

If anyone would like me to look at that will please let me know.

Again I am assuming somebody has checked the National Burial Index. Can you confirm that please.

At that time Jonas could have been either a Joseph or a Josiah.

Thanks, Mark. Yes his will has been checked, which said he was “of the parish of St Pancras, Middlesex”, but apparently there is no trace in the church registers of that area.

I am only quoting from the Club's newsletter, so I don't actually know what other sources have been checked. I also had noticed that his name came up for the Hampshire Chronicle of the 24th July 1820, but hadn't yet paid to access it, so thanks too for that. That issue is pretty soon after his death on the 20th, so he cannot have been too far afield. That probably counts out another theory that he may have been buried in Limerick, Ireland, where his family were from.

Tracing a London Burial is next to impossible even in a possible location like Middlesex. :x

Hadn't realised until now that Rose was captain of HMS Agamemnon when she sank.

There is a comment in the United Service Journal in 1839 as follows:

Of Captain Rose, the last captain of the ship, little is known, except that he was never employed after losing this ship and that he died in 1821 (s.b. 1820)

As this was less than 20 years after his death it suggests that he had gone into some voluntary(?) exile from public life.

Doesn't help - but maybe explains why he is proving so illusive.

P.S. Do you know from the will if he was married. Just a thought that if you could find his wife you might find him??!!
