Do you know, I lived in Edinburgh for five years and had more picnics on Calton Hill than I care to remember, and I never realised that the Nelson Monument was meant to be a telescope?

I wonder if it was designed to look like a telescope or just ended up looking like one.

I took a quick look around the internet and I don't see any mention of "telescopes" around the time when it was built. (but I could easily have missed something).

I suppose somebody in Edinburgh would be able to clarify??!!
