I wonder if anyone can help with this one.

I'm trying to locate the living descendants of the Rev. Doctor A J Scott, Nelson's chaplain and private secretary between 1803-5.

Any leads would be gratefully received.

Many thanks!

There's a little bit here about Margaret Gatty, Scott's daughter, and her husband, Rev Dr Alfred Gatty, and their children.

Maybe this will give the genealogical sleuths something to go on.

I don't know anything about the wider family tree but I do know that one of the main lines of descendants died out.

Reginald Gatty was a direct descendant of Scott. He was well known as a librettist and actor. He became associated with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and was living in Birmingham when he died.

He had inherited a few of Scott's papers and books and as he had never married decided to leave them to Birmingham Library. This was in the 1930's.

I have seen a few of the papers but against other references it says that that the items are on long-term loan to the National Maritime Museum.

Sorry this is no direct help in your quest but may be of some interest.

Here is Reginald Gatty's obituary from the Times.

He appears to have been the eldest son of the eldest son which must be the reason that his g.grandfathers papers had passed down to him.

Shame no mention that he was a descendant of Rev. Scott.

I don't think this is of any direct help, but it's an interesting article on Margaret Gatty's collection of coral and bryozoa at the Weston Park Museum, Sheffield: http://www.thestar.co.uk/community/the- ... _1_3275507
