I expect many members already know of the custom/tradition/regulation of flying a church pennant when a religious service is in progress aboard a Royal Navy ship. It is new to me, however, and might be of interest to others. Sylvia (our Dutch member) will be interested in the history behind the design of the pennant.

A futher thought: there are services in the Book of Common Prayer especially for use at sea. Was attendance at religious services compulsory? I am thinking of regular divine service as opposed to a burial at sea which one might attend as a mark of respect to the dead rather than religious observance.

In the army, Church Parade on Sundays used to be compulsory but is no longer.

Anna, you are right. I read your post with great interest. I did not know this about church pendants. Thank you for posting this thread.
