IN HIS recent screen role as a pirate captain in the hit Pirates of the Caribbean movies, legendary Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was trying to avoid the Royal Navy.

But in real life the mega-star is an avid history buff, and made a private visit to see Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory.

Good on him!

I've still got an old scrap book from 1964 with pictures stuck in it of the Rolling Stones and all the other top British groups from that halcyon era.

So I have had a soft spot for them since the very early days.

But of course it's KR's erstwhile colleague Bill Wyman (Stones bassist for about 30 years) who is even better known as a historian.

I have seen him interviewed on TV about his passion for metal detecting and he has put his name to at least one book.

Good on them both!!

Here's another link revealing that Tommy Steele (pop star - anyone else remember him? ) - and the actor Robert Lindsay are both interested in HMS Victory and Nelson:

And i do believe before filming Master and Commander, Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany and a large part of the cast and crew visited HMS Victory in Portsmouth to get a feel of what serving on a ship during the 1800's would have been like.

Yes Mark, Brian Jones was the founder member, and still a mystery over his death. I used to know Alexis Korner.

Anymore photographs of Keith on the Victory.

Purely by coincidence I noticed something earlier today. The singer Gene Pitney apparently claimed that one of his ancestors was on HMS Victory at Trafalgar.

There certainly was a marine named Pitney on the muster - that much we can confirm.

Steve will be aware that Gene Pitney was quite closely involved with the Stones in the early/mid 60's

I can recall his name and even maybe his picture on the back of one of my Rolling Stones L.P.'s.

And I believe that Jagger & Richards wrote at least one of his early songs.

I wonder if KR is aware of that claim by his old friend/colleague of nearly 50 years ago??!!

Would like to say here, with I think a great photograph of this Great man who has had Rhytham all his life, and he has visited a Great Bastion of Naval Power and a Great Man who Commanded the Seas.

Keep Rockin Keith a Great day for the Dockyard.

Just back to the Gene Pitney connection.

Hard to get a better picture than this.

GP sat directly in front of a young and oh-so innocent looking KR.
