Near Den Helder the remains have been found of an English soldier who died in 1799. He was a member of the Coldstream Guards, and fought with the English invasion army against Napoleon’s army that occupied Holland. The remains of his arms will be shown to the public in Fort Kijkduin near Den Helder.

According to the Dutch TV news, if his identity ever will be known, his remains will be returned to England.
I am not sure if this is correct English, I am sorry if it is not.

Sylvia,

Thanks, very interesting. I have just been reading a little about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Russ ... of_Holland

If the remains are, quite rightly, to be returned to the UK, then those dealing with this must presumably have been in consultation for some while. If the man has been identified by the insignia on the remains of his uniform, then I presume also that the Coldstream Guards have been informed? They would of course be immensely interested.

Hello Kester,

Thank you for your reaction. The remains were found already in the beginning of this year. Because he was found in a natural landscape, it was made public just now. To protect the area against too many “visitors”.

Sylvia,

Thanks. Since you say he was found in natural landscape, then I imagine this was at the site of one of the battles? This then presupposes that there might be the remains of other soldiers. Is there actually an archaeological dig going on?

Hello Kester,

I don’t know under what circumstances the remains were found. It was not mentioned in the article or on the TV news. Here is a link to the news, it shows a picture of the soldier’s arms that were found with his remains.

I hope the link will work in a foreign country too.

Sylvia,

Thanks again. The link worked fine and an interesting picture. Left centre looks to be part of the pelvis, whilst at top right are what appear to be the trigger guards from two muskets.

I'm sure they were, but I hope the remains were treated with respect.
