While Googling for chance encounters with Captain Samuel Sutton, I came across another Samuel Sutton with a naval connection. He invented an air pump to deal with the foul air below decks resulting from so many men being packed in a small space. The invention was not simply to provide a more congenial environment, though that was a welcome by-product, but to be a preventative against scurvy, in the false belief that foul air was the cause of the malady. Unfortunately, there is a paywall to the document in the link, but it might be of interest to anyone who has access.
