I note that you are a consultant Martitime Art historian.

I wonder if you could help with a small problem of my own. For some time I have been searching for an image of Samuel Sutton, admired by Nelson, briefly captain of Victory, a respected and courageous officer. I have searched in the NMM, the major portrait galleries, all the provincial galleries that might have a connection with him, however tenuous; and I have contacted most dealers in maritime art and prints - to no avail.

Should I just give up and admit defeat - or are there other avenues I could explore?

There are various other avenues, including for example the Admiralty Library, part of the Naval Historical Branch at Portsmouth. It is also likely that this officer would have been portrayed in the Naval Chronicle and I will check in my collection.

I will look at other sources too and report back.
