This little ditty was first published in Toulon in 1910 and was reprinted shortly afterwards in The Mariner’s Mirror of February 1911. No English version was printed. I am grateful to The Nelson Yearbook 2005 of the Nelson Society of Australia for the text given here.

I’ve changed one or two typos I spotted in the text – there are sure to be others I’ve missed, so apologies for imperfections.

Anybody fancy having a go at a translation? Post ‘Inside Nelson’s World’ if you’re shy.
