Today is Good Friday so it seems fitting to post the story of the traditional ceremony held every Good Friday at the pub The Widow's Son in the east End of London.

For overseas readers, hot cross buns, made of sweetened bread containing dried fruits and spices and marked on top with a cross, are a traditionally eaten, warmed and dripping with butter, on Good Friday. We have just had ours at tea, and the story of the widow's son came up in conversation.

Tycho, what a sad story, whether it is true or not. I think it a nice tradition of the Royal Navy to bring another Cross bun every year, One of my English friends sent me cross buns in her package, we will eat them at our brunch on Easter day.

I use to watch the Matthew Passion on Dutch TV. (It is a tradition over here to broadcast the MP every Good Friday). I find it always so moving, such lovely, wonderful music. When I was in hospital, after my accident, it was Good Friday too, my Muslim neighbour in hospital and I were almost in tears, watching the Matthew Passion. Afterwards we felt better after having some of that lovely Moroccan food her family brought her plenty of.
