Hello All,
With the 200th Anniversay of Sir Alexander John Ball's death falling on the 25th October, I am very keen to try and locate the where abouts of Ball's Sword of Honour maybe today.
In 1802 the Maltese presented Ball with a Sword of Honour as a token of the islands gratitude for his services to the Maltese Islands.
This first sword was however stolen from Ball's private apartments at San Anton Palace in Balzan. Suspision quickly fell on an Italian, Gio Battista Carminati who was tried and exiled to the island of Gozo and fined the total value of the sword. It was never recovered.
It was felt by the Maltese thatan act of disrespect had been acted against Ball and quickly decided to present a second sword.
This was manufactured by a local Maltese Goldsmith, Saverio Satariano. On the sword were the figures of Faith, Plenty, Prudence, the Arms of Malta, Neptune and other emblems honouring Britain.
Presentation of the sword took place at the Palace on the 17th January 1807 in the presence of a number of distinguished Maltese personalities.
What happened to the sword after Ball's death is a mystery. However in the posthumous portrait of Ball by Henry Pickersgill, the painting shows what must be the Sword of Honour.
This painting was presented to the National Maritime Museum by Ball's son Sir William Keith Ball in 1839. I just wonder if any other effects were also presented like the Sword, His Badge of Office or his Nile medal?
If any members to this Forum are able to assist me in this research. I would be very grateful for any leads.

The NMM does have Alexander Ball's Naval Gold Medal for the battle of the Nile.
