The wiki entry for Lord Exmouth contains the following:

'Consequent on a high-spirited quarrel with his captain, he was put on shore at Marseille.'

I am assuming that it was in the captain's power to unburden himself of a troublesome officer in this way, and that he behaved correctly. Was it usual, though?

I would have thought this was both unusual and irregular.

What sort of officer was involved? A captain certainly did not have the power to remove a commissioned officer or a warrant officer - although I suppose he could grant them shore leave if they requested it!
