There is a comment on Nelson by Clive Aslett in today's Times - nothing earth-shattering, but it's always interesting to hear contemporary views about Nelson.

I've tried to locate it on the Times on Line website, without luck. It might be my incompetence, or maybe the piece has been dropped. We get the first edition out here in the sticks. Sometimes, articles (and 'bloopers' like Hardy's VC) are replaced in the later on-line edition.

If anyone fancies having a go at retrieval, it would be good to have the link here.

Anna, The Times Online search is almost totally useless – for current stories anyway. Use Google News search (not Google Web search) instead – for example: http://news.google.co.uk/news/search?aq ... tio+nelson

Better still, use this search and set up a Google email alert – just scroll to the bottom of the page, click on the link and select the options you want. (You may have to sign into your Google account first.) Or click here. Then you will be notified of every news article that Google finds on Nelson.

Many thanks, Tony.

I've signed up to alerts about Nelson so look out for more links in future!

Despite your advice, Tony, I've been unable to locate on line a letter in today's Times mentioning the Minotaur's flag - still in existence.

I'll post a transcript when I get a moment; I've taken a moment's break from blowing up balloons for my grand-daughter's 2nd birthday party this afternoon!

When you have done searches in Times Online - have you selected it to show "Newest first"?

I just did that and the transcript of the letter came up easilly:

Quote:
Sir, While it is to be hoped that the splendid Union Jack flown by HMS Spartiate at Trafalgar, and auctioned on Wednesday, can stay in England, it is not “the last surviving” such flag (“Trafalgar flag’s £320,000 auction sets scene for battle over export,” Oct 21).

The Spartiate shared the glory of capturing the Spanish 80-gun ship Neptuno with HMS Minotaur. The 20-year-old master’s mate of the Minotaur, Stephen Hilton, bore back in triumph to his home village of Selling, Kent, both the Neptuno’s Spanish ensign and the Minotaur’s Union Jack. The two flags hung side by side in the Hilton Chapel of the parish church for more than 200 years, and have only recently been taken down for restoration work. Remarkably, two of Stephen’s brothers also fought at Trafalgar, George on HMS Africa and Robert on HMS Swiftsure. Their combined prize money paid for a fashionable extension to a house in the village — still known as Trafalgar House.

Edward Peters
Selling, Kent
