What is the definitive answer to the question- Why was Nelson in Monmouth ?
I live in Monmouth & have become very weary of the commonly held answer-He was counting the trees in the Forest of Dean for his Navy.
I am sure that all you Nelsonians will supply the truth.
Regards
Dave.

Dave:

Nelson's visit to Monmouth was simply part of a larger tour that combined the business of visiting Sir William Hamilton's estates in Pembrokeshire, with the pleasure of a holiday tour visiting various places of interest en route, including Llandovery (where the four poster bed he slept in is still in the Nelson room at the Castle Hotel - and I have slept in it!) and also Monmouth. Monmouth might have been chosen because it was accessible by river from Ross-on-Wye, thus avoiding a tedious journey by road. Also, the Kymin Naval Monument, which Nelson visited, is nearby so no doubt that would have been an attraction.

The accounts for the journey and the places they visited are listed in the Hamilton & Nelson Papers. The accounts make very interesting reading. I'll try and post them sometime soon.

David

You need a book called "Nelson & the Hamiltons on Tour" by Edward Gill.

There are second-hand copies available on the internet for almost nothing - or you could get one from your local library.

Then next time somebody asks "Why exactly did Nelson come to Monmouth?" your reply will be "Have you got an hour to spare . . . . . . ?" :)

Thank you to Tycho & Mark, for answering my query,i always thought that the reason for his visit was more detailed than that which is commonly held by the general public, also it is quite amazing how many think that Nelson had a Navy.
I shall be on the lookout for the book,"Nelson & The Hamiltons on Tour" and carry it with me at all times.
Best
Dave.
