Kept in the dark for over two hundred years, the people of Bolton were last week stunned to learn the truth from their former mayor in this shocking revelation:
Quote:
History buff Cllr Connell also lifted the lid on the origins of the name, Hamilton Court.

The old housing was close to Nelson Street and the former Mayor of Bolton revealed that Lady Emma Hamilton was the mistress of Admiral Horatio Nelson.

Whatever next?

Hmm! They kept this salacious bit of gossip from our tender ears when I was at Bolton School!

Another interesting snippet - not very shocking, though, is that it is Sir William Hamilton's birthday today.

I tried to post a link to his Wiki entry but it wouldn't work. Do Google Sir William's wiki entry and have a look at the very strange little memorial in the 'Dessau-Worlitz Garden Realm'- a mini Vesuvius that can 'erupt' with fireworks and a model of the 'Villa Emma' - it looks a bit like a Portakabin.

Tony asked 'Whatever next?' Well - this: it appears on a travel website that I received via a 'google alert'

'If you're looking to use St Kitts holidays to explore Nevis, you'll find a plethora of historical attractions to enjoy here, including the former home of American statesman Alexander Hamilton - which is now a museum - and the spot where hero Admiral Nelson married local woman Fanny Brice in 1787.

Fanny Brice was a 'Jewish-American comic-genius', her lifestory loosely told in the film 'Funny Girl.' She must have livened up Burnham Thorpe no end.

Strange we never heard of that, during those years 'on the beach'. I wonder if she did 'stand up' on an improvised stage at the Rectory? If so, either Nelson wasn't amused or they decided to keep it quiet! :?

Tony - what have you started? This thread could run and run.....read the shock revelation that 'Nelson was a benefits cheat'.

PS - on second thoughts, apologies, Tony. At least your 'shock revelation' was true!
