I found a newspaper article from 1919 which describes a Trafalgar man . . . John Ingram . . . as a "Sergeant Armourer".

On the Ayshford Trafalgar Roll his rank is given as "Sergeant of Marines".

Does anyone know if Sergeant Armourer was a valid rank at the time of Trafalgar?

Any thoughts about the use of that term would be much appreciated.

What I am really after is whether the newspaper was right or wrong.

Thanks

A quick google suggests that in the army at that time, Sergeant Armourer was an appointment rather than a rank, and carried some extra pay. I don't know whether such appointments were made in the Marines, but on board ship I cannot see a need because the ship's Armourer (a warrant officer reporting to the Gunner) was responsible for all the ship's muskets, including those of the marines according to Brian Lavery.
