I imagine it has slipped nobody's notice, or perhaps it has  , that today is St. George's Day! I also imagined that it isn't celebrated as it as once was, but having googled around there seem to be quite a few celebrations taking place! Perhaps its just that, in true British style, not a big fuss is made!

I came across this website promoting the Day and calling for it to be made a public holiday (slim chance there, I think!). It puts me in mind of another day, in October, which many – including all on this site I would imagine – would like to see as a public holiday (probably a slim chance there as well!)

Turn up the sound and you'll hear a rendition of Henry V's speech before Agincourt, delivered with gusto and seemingly in a small room, but to my mind not quite á la Laurence Olivier, or Kenneth Branagh!:

Well, there are quite a few St George's flags flying between here and Shepton Mallet where I've been this morning! It is only in recent years that the occasion has been marked at all. On the weekend nearest to St George's Day there is usually fun in Wells - one year a very large volunteer furry green dragon was chased round the city centre by children with helmets and swords!

It would be nice to have St George's Day as a public holiday, though Trafalgar Day would be even better as far as I'm concerned - not only a chance to commemorate Nelson's victory, but since it's in October, it would make a welcome break in the long period between the August bank Holiday and Christmas when there are currently no public holidays at all.

Stephen,

Would you like to tell us more? According to good old 'Wiki' St George is the Patron Saint of Gozo (amongst several other places).
