I happened on this little feature which lists 10 unusual pubs

http://uk.travel.yahoo.com/p-promo-3312343

Glanced to see if I had been to any of them which indeed I had - 3!

And was interested to see that one of them is the Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorpe.

P.S. Many years ago set myself the challenge of visiting the smallest, oldest and highest pubs in Britain. Pleased to say I succeeded!!

Yes, the Lord Nelson in Burnham Thorpe, formerly The Plough, is an excellent establishment serving good food and with a display of Nelson memorabilia.

There are about 250 pubs in England named The Lord Nelson, many of which, I assume, had earlier names that, like The Plough, were changed to commemorate the hero.

A number of pubs were named the Duke of Wellington, though nothing like the same number as were named after Nelson. A pub in a village near here is named after Welllington, but as 'The Prince of Waterloo'.

Another 18th century miltary hero who had a considerable number of pubs named after him was the Marquess of Granby. I believe, but have been unable to confirm, that this was because, like Nelson, he showed concern for the men under him, and set up many of the retired common soldiery as the landlords of hostelries, who showed their gratitude by giving their pubs his name. The inn sign usually shows him at full gallop, with his wig flying off, as it did in reality at one battle (I'm not sure which) during the Seven Years War.
