Tony:

this might be of particular interest to you - if you haven't already read it - since Captain Mansfield took part in this event:

"Defying Napoleon - How Britain bombarded Copenhagen and seized the Danish Fleet in 1807" by Thomas Munch-Petersen (pub. Stroud 2007)

It sounds as if the author is a Dane. If so, it could be useful to have a Danish perspective.

Anna, I also found this:

It looks a most interesting book.

Very interesting link - and please note - the book is published by Sutton Publishing, not Stroud, as I stated in the earlier post. Amazon didn't give the publisher but another website I located gave the publisher - clearly wrongly - as Stroud. My apologies.

This does look interesting, although my guess is that the part played by false intelligence may perhaps be overstated. I would have thought that France's new alliance with Russia, and the threat to Denmark and Sweden, with the consequent threat to British access to the Baltic, was in itself sufficient to prompt action, regardless of any plans to attack Ireland. But I am not qualified to judge, and had better read the book...
