To all those who may have served in the Maltese Islands on this thread, today being the 31st Anniversary of British Forces leaving the islands. The role of the Royal Navy was with the departure of HMS London. A sad day for many.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the reminder and for the picture, with Ball's memorial in the foreground. As to the London, I think the old county class were some of the best-looking ships around at the time. Sadly, I don't think there are any left now, even preserved – but perhaps Robbie or PN, who have probably been there courtesy HM Government, might like to comment?

Incidentally, how is the British involvement with Malta viewed these days and particularly the RN's connection? I would imagine the older Maltese perhaps remember it with some affection, but that the younger generations don't see it in the same light. Is it taught in schools over there? I imagine there is something about it in the museum there however, which I would also like to see - should we get there! Nice to see, btw, that you have 'G.C.' on your address.

Sadly the younger generation are not interested at all here, and interest is only realy in lining their pockets and the weekend. Interest is generated only when there is a Naval visit when money can be made and the poor crews are ripped off by the Taxi service.
The only interest that they may have today, is that they got a Public Holiday out of it which is called ''Freedom Day''

I don't think you will find many of them trying to find their Ancestors as Maltese crews on Nelson's fleet, of which there were many.
