Hi Ed,

The email I sent you has pinged back!

I'll try again sending the message through the website messaging system.

Aaaargh! help, please!

The new messaging system since the update is confusing me!

I've sent an email to Ed, got a message 'email sent' but there's nothing in the Outbox.

Ed, can you let me know whether you've got the email. If not, perhaps you could send me an email to my private address so that I can reply. I thought I had your correct email but clearly not.

So sorry for the confusion.

Tony:

if you have a moment, could you set out, in Idiotspeak please, how I send a PM via N&HW?

TIA

Anna, that message suggests to me that you may have clicked on the 'email' button, rather than the 'pm' button. That would send an email (from the forum) rather than a Private Message, so nothing would show in the PM Outbox.

(N.B. if other users are confused by the mention of an 'email' button, it may only be visible to administrators or on member's profiles who have allowed email.)

To send a PM, click on the 'pm' button (that shows on a member's post or in their profile), fill in the message text and click on 'Submit'. It should be as simple as that.

Many thanks, Tony.

I've sent you a 'test' PM. It should be in your inbox.

Sorry to be so dim.

I have been in touch with Colin Heggie of the Nile Clump project with regards to the Alexander Clump and this is the gist of his answer:

Delighted to hear from you, and extraordinary you should mention HMS Alexander. As it happens, HMS Alexander is not one of the clumps that has been replanted. It is south of the A303 and all the replanted clumps are north of the road. However, it is still clearly visible - one lone beech tree - only a few hundred yards from my house - and for the last few months (only) I have been planning to have it replanted! I have the landowner's permission and the Rotary Club are on-side. Just need to sort out the funding. So you can sponsor the whole clump if you like!

The lowest quote recently received for the whole new clump, planted, including perimeter stock fence is £1750. Of course, if I succeed in doing the replanting this autumn then the individual beech trees will be available for sponsoring if there has been no sponsor for the whole clump

The whole Alexander Clump will consist: 76 beech, 40 maples as shields & 40 hawthorns for the perimeter enclosed in a 30m diam hexagonal stock fence.

Regarding individual sponsorship, it is £25 to sponsor a young beech tree. For this the donor receives a signed A4 Certificate for a unique tree on stiff cream card, plus the map and an explanation. Many people have dedicated trees to loved ones. Please spread the word as much as you can - the more publicity the better.

The 211th Anniversary of the Battle of the Nile on Sat 1 Aug 2009 was marked by a visit to the Clumps by Members of the Nelson Society. This was followed by a very enjoyable lunch at the Holiday Inn, Solstice Park. The Society has asked to visit again this year and it is hoped the President of the Society will be able to come this time.

Contact Colin Heggie at:
nileclumps@yahoo.com

If there is reasonable support for sponsoring the Alexander Clump I will personally scrape the balance needed to see the Clump replanted and fenced this Autumn!

I can’t believe I said that!! Yet another moment of madness!!!

I'll be happy to sponsor a tree in the Alexander clump, Ed.

I'll get in touch with Colin Heggie. Since N&HW already sponsors a tree in Minotaur, I think I'll ask for this one to be dedicated to the memory of Colin White, from N&HW. We discussed a possible memorial to Colin when he died, and I think a tree would be most fitting.

A lovely idea Anna. I had the pleasure of being invited up to Colin White’s hallowed offices in Greenwich to show him my research and partake of coffee a few years back.

I will have to dedicate one tree to Sir AJB himself and another to the Maltese who suffered through Napoleon’s invasion prior to the Battle of the Nile.

And if the one tree that’s still standing is to be sacrificed for the security of the new saplings and it happened to be one of the originals, I would request a section of the trunk :!:

Colin Heggie sent me an update on the Alexander Clump of which this is part:

"A short update on the replanting - good news and bad - all in all, pretty good.

The good news is that Pamela Sandell, the land owner has given approval for the planting.

The bad news is that we can't replant until late March. Alexander is sited at the end of a game strip (pheasants in our case) and replanting in the next few months will upset the birds and the shooting season which is about to start. At the moment the birds are being intensively reared and fed right alongside 'our' tree. This is a genuine reason to delay."

Just a brief update:
On the 23 March the Alexander Clump was replanted with Beech but not ring-fenced.

Colin Heggie wishes to state that it is early days and as the Clump is on private land - Park Farm - it should not be approached without permission but he hopes a formal event will take place on Monday Aug 1st, the Anniversary of the Battle.

Hopefully they will all thrive to accompany the one surviving tree.

Many thanks for the update, Ed, and for the two previous posts which I must have missed

I'll get in tocuh with Colin Heggie and arrange for a tree to be dedicated to the memory of Colin White from N&HW.

More on the progress ouf our tree in memory of Colin White:

Hi Anna,

Nice to hear from you again. You have B31 Minotaur. Thank you for your continued support.

Rest assured, I already have you down for a tree in Alexander in memory of Dr Colin White and will be in contact again when this can proceed further. A diagram of the new clump has to be drawn up and copies printed before Certificates can be issued. Please give me a few weeks and I will be in contact.

Best Wishes,

Colin

PS Delighted with the rain on the newly planted trees over the weekend - hoping for some more. This is very much in contrast to my usual personal preference for abundant warm sunshineMore on

An update on the progress of the Alexander Clump:

A beech tree, number B8, has now been dedicated to the memory of Dr Colin White by this website http://www.nelsonandhisworld.co.uk.

Thanks Anna,

Good to know – and a suitable advert for N&HW! :)

Will there be pictures later?
