I don't know if I had any ancestors in Nelson's navy, but I'd like to check.
Our surname was Staines. (This is not that stupid "Seaman Staines" joke)
We were from the U.K. but I'm having a devil of a time researching them.

Hi Peter,

At Trafalgar, William Henry Staines was a midshipman in the Achilles, Thomas Stains was an ordinary seamna in the Phoebe, and Jacob Stainer (not Staines) was a private in the marines in the Prince.

There were three officers named Staines in the Navy in the late 18th/early19th:

Captain Sir Thomas Staines - b. 1776 Margate; entered Navy 1790; commissioned Lieutenant July 1796 / promoted Commander July 1802 / promoted Captain January 1806. Knighted in December 1809; died 1830

His younger brother was William Staines - commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1797, but died the same year in Haslar hospital, Gosport

There was also a James Staines; Lieutenant commissioned in 1815; died 1834

Looks like I have some more names to search, but that's what keeps me interested in genealogy. I will let you know if I find a connection. My great great grandfather was William Staines and he left the U.K. and came to Galveston Texas in 1840.

Is there any way to track this chap ? Mainly where he was from and did he have a son named William who left the U.K. ? Likewise with the others.
