Robbie,

I did actually apply to join the navy when I was about seventeen, but unfortunately was disbarred on medical grounds. I was hearbroken for some while after, I seem to remember! However, I have thought since that I would not have been able to sail in all the square-riggers that I have if I had joined! I have though been on a couple of RN seadays, the first being aboard I think a sister of the Duncan, HMS Hardy (strangely enough!), the other being in 1966 on HMS Lowestoft, where we were part of a squadron out of Portsmouth. Very exciting it was too, as the navy put on a little demonstration of gunnery at towed targets, RAS, being buzzed by aircraft etc. I seem to remember the 'flagship' was the old Lion, and the other ships included Dainty and Defender.

I am really sorry you did not make the RN Kester, I have to admit I really enjoyed the life...............

Sorry about the confusion, Kester! I am so busy at the moment, I made a hasty visit and did not pay attention. Thanks for the link to the NMM comment. I actually have friends who are art historians staying with me at the moment, and they said at dinner that Turner's paintings of Trafalgar were not well received at the time, which was confirmed in the NMM link.

Anna,

Not to worry, I understand!

Yes, there were several critics at the time mainly, I gather, from the experts, like Hardy! As you see there are still some today!

The story of the painting and why it was commissioned is interesting. I believe too, that at the moment conservationists at the NMM are restoring the frame.

Robbie,

I have gotten over my disappointment now! Thanks for the link to John Chancellor – he is a great artist too. I think my favourite though, was Derek Gardner, who sadly died not so long ago. I think for the ships of Nelson's period he couldn't be bettered:
