The role of the oak tree in our maritime history is monumental. Nelson fired off papers about the need to plant oak forests; Collingwood took walks, scattering acorns from his pocket. I thought members might be interested (and saddened) to read this piece from the BBC website on the threat to our native oak.

Thanks Anna for pointing out Simon Schama’s article. Twice I caught the end of his “Point of View” talk on Radio 4.
At the time you were writing this thread I was splitting oak logs from some major winter pruning of one of my six oak trees—and if you excuse the order in which I relate—I happened to be living in the Sevenoaks area during the hurricane of ’89 and I have eight little oaks in pots!
I will certainly be keeping a close eye on my trees with fingers crossed in the coming years.

I shall now get back to the log splitting—with a machine of course--as I damaged my shoulder falling over the edge of my amphitheatre whilst building a safety wall!!

I do not jest!!!
Ed :)

Anna,

Thanks for posting that very interesting, though-provoking and yes, sad piece. Let's hope something can be done to eradicate this disease – and that money is set aside for this.

Ed,

You would seem to be doing your 'bit' here, much like the landowners of the !8th/19th centuries. Good luck in your endeavours! I do hope your shoulder gets better soon.
