Who appears in the portraits on the new Home Page? On the 'Planning Mutiny' thread
Devenish wrote:
Like the new opening page by the way. I'm trying to guess who all the pictures are of, without looking in the first instance. I have three at the moment, perhaps four - can anyone do better?
(I thought perhaps this deserved its own thread.)

Well, I'm pretty confident of five, think I know another, and have wild guesses for another two - which leaves me totally stumped on a couple more.

On second thoughts, I think I will post my answers in the private forum for those who want to look away now - and that way I don't embarrass myself too publicly either.

I'm sure one or two here must be able to rattle them all off?

I'll post all the names on 'Inside Nelson's World' in about a week's time.

In the meantime, would you like some clues?

8 he went west in the east

9 honar est a nilo

10 a donnish fellow?

Well, those clues provide a revealing glimpse into the mind of their author...

All is now clear except number 2, who I thought I recognised, but I am now baffled.

One of my wild guesses looks correct, the other not - I should have spotted he was wearing the wrong uniform!

Help! What have I revealed about my mind? I'm glad you found it, though. Some days, I don't know where it is!

Oh, you know number two, Tony! Who chomped on an apple as he sailed into battle?

(Sounds like the first line of a shanty:

Who chomped on an apple as he sailed into battle,
Saying, 'Nelson would want to be here.'?
Who didn't care for signals or his second in command
But would lay a Frenchman close, never fear.....')

Doh! Right all along - but I was struggling to figure out his connection with Adam & Eve!

At the risk of sounding like the resident pedant, I must point out (why?) that Adam and Eve didn't eat an apple! (see Genesis, Chapter 3, verse 6).

What? Are you saying the garden of Eden weren't down in Zummerzet, where the zyder apples grow? Did they not have Cheddar cheese, neither?

Are we sure it's not the right man wearing the wrong uniform?

I was almost convinced the chap had moved on from epaulettes to acquiring a whole coat.

If that's not the case, then I'm still stumped, cored, peeled and de-pipped.

Can I have another clue? Please?

Number 10? - Not a very friendly fellow, he didn't hang around all that long.

Apologies to Tycho for butting in again, but some spam this morning prompted thoughts of alternative clues for number 10:

'Not initially in adulterated Viagra'

or:

'Six in short anagram'

I'm not a crossword fan myself, so I may not have adhered to the strict conventions.

In view of my earlier comment about clues, I must emphasise that it was only the spam that brought this to mind!

Aha! Eureka???

Tony - Your first clue had me barking completely up the wrong tree (or should that be yardarm) looking for a matching portrait of a certain Neapolitan admiral/patriot/traitor.

I'm certainly no crossword buff, but think the anagrams finally did the trick to jump start the redundant brain cells.

I'll post the results with the others 'Inside Nelson' for final scrutiny.

Thanks again for the extra clues.
